balance 2
In one of the walls of the auditory of the Kultureel Centrum in Tilburg is a narrow skylight-window at a height of 4 metres from the floor. On the sill of that window are 3 poles, varying in length from 18 to 21 metders. They have been constructed from bamboo-parts from thick to thin, in such a way that when they balance on the sill the thick part is outside and the thinning part inside. They have been balanced in such a way that the ends come inside from 10 to 13 metres and glide some 10 to 15 centimetres above the floor.
I am standing in the room with, lying in my head, a pole of 18 metres, which has been constructed of bamboo in such a way that when it balances, both thinning ends glide some 10 to 15 centimetres above the floor. When the audience enters, I am standing with the pole on my head. This pole moves slightly by moments of me getting out of bodily balance, while the poles hanging out of the window move under the influence of air-currents outside. The pole I'am carrying ends on the floor in the same area where the ends of the other poles touch the floor. Sometimes the poles touch each other. After exactly half an hour the light is dimmed and I put down the pole.
