Balance 3
The museum’s courtyard is paved with Meuse-cobbles. In the center it forms a square which is divided by smaller squares and diagonals.
On each of the four main diagonals a heavy long steel sheet is installed, which is kept in erect position by a man who, standing legs widespread on a corner of the square, holds the sheet in balance.
The sheets stand with one long side on the diagonal, their ends meet not far from the center of the square.
I keep one of the sheets in balance. The height of the sheet reaches up to my breast, my hands resting on the top edge.
Due to the heavy weight of the sheet I continuously have to concentrate on the balance: if I allow the sheet to move a little too far away from the balance point, I have to drop it, and this would be a sign for the other performers to drop their sheet as well.
This vulnerable situation exists, at twilight, for exactly one hour in complete silence. During this period the courtyard is open to the public.
