Multi-vocal speech performances 2 spoken works that I earlier performed solo, and recently reworked for small groups of participants in the intimacy of a living room or workspace. - each work will be performed only once after a brief instruction, without test or rehearsal. - the text material for each work will be handed out. - each work will be carried out according to the specified concept and text material. - the pronunciation of words is entirely up to the performers. - the works are not language-bound; speakers of all languages are welcome to participate. - all persons present are both participants and listeners. - the works are to be carried out with 3 up to 6 participants. - depending on the number of people present, the occupancy may vary per work. - the host can decide at forehand which works in what order will be performed. ps. these works are not suitable for a public-accessable situation. The works names: meridians 9:48 (source: world map Robinson Projection) We depart, each in one of four directions, for a journey around the world, starting and ending at the north pole. In a given time schedule, we pronounce the names of countries, cities, seas, mountains and rivers that the assigned meridian passes. A fifth voice indicates the passage of time: the distances/silences between the names. time duration dependent on the number of participants. We are standing or sitting close together. Each participant has a stopwatch. Person 1 starts the stopwatch and starts counting the seconds aloud. Exactly on the moment that person 1 says: one minute, person 2 starts the stopwatch and starts counting the seconds. Person 1 continues counting. When person 1 says: two minutes, person 3 starts etc. When the last started person says: one minute, we abruptly stop counting names: wind directions appr. 10 min. (source: Google Translate) There are four performers positioned in the four wind directions. We have 120 translations of the words north east south west on paper. One of the performers announces the language, after which we pronounce the name of the given wind direction in the relevant language. names: wind the word wind in 70 languages. ource: google translate. duration and number of participants variable We stand or sit on some distance from each other. We agree on a fixed order. Person 1 has a list of words for wind. This person pronounces one of the words. The next in line repeats this word, then the next etc. The words need to be pronounced without interval, so that they move as an unbroken sound through the space. Immediately when the last person has pronounced the word, the next word is spoken until the full list is completed. panorama north east south west. 9:00 There are four participants positioned in the four wind directions. We describe our view in the wind direction assigned to each of us. The descriptions start at ground level, after which the gaze focuses further away in an upward movement which is expressed in the hours of the clock: the view at the ground is 6 o'clock, the description ends 12 o'clock when looking straight up. A fifth voice indicates the changes of the viewing-angle in 1.5-minute steps. names: the head source: Atlas of anatomic correlations in CT and MRI Thieme NY 1988 There are 6 participants: 3 speakers, 3 indicators duration variable The work is about anatomical sections through the middle of the head in three directions: coronal = frontal, sagittal = sideways and axial = horizontal. The speakers have a list of Latin names of anatomical parts that appear in their assigned section. The indicators have a drawing of the relevant section and with their fingers indicate the section on the head. The indicators decide themselves how they do this: one time slowly, or a few times quicker: the section has to stay indicated as long as the names of that section are recited. rotation 3 1:40 We sit or stand in the four wind directions. We pronounce the names of directions between the main wind directions. Each speaker pronounces the name of the assigned main wind direction f.i. North and continues pronouncing the names of the intermediate directions f.i. NNNNE up to NEEEE, after which the speaker moves to east and continues from there. This continues until the four speakers are back on their starting direction. ships horn blast scheepshoornstoot duration variable 3 up to 5 participants stand or sit at the greatest possible distance from each other in line. Person 1 pronounces the three-part word ships-horn-blast / scheeps-hoorn-stoot in a long drawn way: one full breath per partword. As soon as person 1 finished the first part, person 2 in line starts pronouncing the three-part word in the same way and when this person finished the first part, person 3 etc. When the last participant ended the full word, the cycle repeats two times after short breaks. |
