day 1.2
day 1 28 of december Galerie Block-C
During 24 hours I switch lamps on and off following such a time-schedule that an artificial day is created, in addition to the natural day of December 28.
In the dark space 12 lamps on stands are installed in a circle.
In the circle is a metronome ticking the seconds.
On the wall is a clock and the time-schedule of the cycle.
I make light in one-minute-units: I walk along the lights in 30 seconds turning them on
followed by a second round turning them off.
day 1 contains one hour of unbroken darkness, devided over the beginning an the end, and one hour of unbroken light during the middle hour of the day.
The cycle starts at midnight with a half hour of unbroken darkness.
From 12.30 am. light will be made by performing light-minutes.
The number of light-minutes increases per hour until, during the middle hour of the day the lights are on continuously.
From half past twelve pm. the number of light-minutes decreases again till, during the last half hour before midnight, the space willl be dark again.
day 1 was first performed at Makkom in Amsterdam 1983.
