Rite 2 study
In the chapel of the former Franciscan convent, now artist's gallery Het Wilde Weten, 7 loudspeakers on tripods are set up along the middle line, in such a way that their sound rises upwards into the space. The loudspeakers are connected to walkmen each of which plays an endless tape lasting one minute. On each tape the same fragment of a Gregorian song has been recorded. Because of the imperfect parallel running speeds among the walkmen, an unpredictable pattern of melodies arises; a pattern which penetrates as a sculpture in this music a number of musical parameters are presented in a very pure form. 3 different songs forms have been chosen; because the musical form of a song, for example monotone, or strongly rhythmical, laid in a number of layers over each other, result in a totally different “sculpture”. I have called this piece a study, because I intend to perform “ Rite 2” live in a church with 7 singers, whereby a song will be sung, each time with a different character, at 5 moments spread over the day.
